Mastodon
Decentralized social network server that federates with the broader Fediverse — run your own instance instead of relying on Twitter/X.
Open source alternative to:
Mastodon is a free, open-source federated social networking platform built on the ActivityPub protocol. Rather than being a single centralized platform, Mastodon is a network of independently operated servers (instances) that can communicate with each other — this is known as the Fediverse.
Users can sign up on any instance and still interact with users on other instances. Each instance can have its own rules, moderation policies, and community focus. Mastodon offers microblogging similar to Twitter — posts up to 500 characters, media attachments, polls, bookmarks, and a chronological home timeline with no algorithmic manipulation.
Running your own Mastodon instance gives you complete control over your social media presence, your data, and your community's moderation standards. Notable features include full-text search, content warnings, unlisted and follower-only posts, and a powerful moderation toolkit.
