SoundCraft is a free, open-source digital audio workstation that re-creates the Avid Pro Tools workflow in pure Rust: an Edit window for arranging and editing, a Mix window with faders, inserts, sends and automation, and the Shuffle, Slip, Spot and Grid edit modes and tools engineers already know. One Rust codebase runs natively on macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD and in a browser via WebAssembly — no subscription, no account, works offline.

The engine covers real work: multitrack editing with playlists and comping, clip gain lines, fades and crossfades in five shapes; a mixer with ten inserts and ten sends per track, busses, aux inputs, VCAs and routing folders; breakpoint automation for volume, pan, mute, sends and every plugin parameter, recorded live in Write, Touch and Latch; instrument tracks with built-in synths, a piano-roll MIDI editor with a velocity lane, Standard MIDI File import/export and audio-to-MIDI; a score editor with MusicXML export; a picture track with H.264, ProRes and Motion JPEG playback; and surround from stereo to 9.1.6 and Ambisonics. Built-in processors include EQs, compressors, de-essers, room and plate reverbs, saturators and synths, and your CLAP, VST3 and Audio Unit plugins load with their editors too. Bounces go to WAV, AIFF or FLAC with dithering and LUFS metering.

Every action is scriptable: the same commands drive the menus, the keyboard, a CLI, a JSON control channel and an MCP server (claude mcp add soundcraft -- soundcraft-cli mcp --demo), and session.inspect lets agents verify their own work. SoundCraft is honest about being pre-alpha — measured at 94% of the incumbent's menu items and roughly 40% of the way to replacing it for real work, with MIDI controller recording, audio device setup and AAF/OMF session interchange still on the alpha checklist. But where Pro Tools needs a subscription, SoundCraft is free, native and yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which platforms does SoundCraft run on?

SoundCraft ships signed builds for macOS (universal), Windows (x64, x86 and Arm), Linux (AppImage, deb, rpm and Flatpak) and FreeBSD, plus a WebAssembly build that runs in the browser. On Linux you need the ALSA headers to build from source.

Can I use my existing audio plugins?

Yes. SoundCraft loads CLAP, VST3 and Audio Unit plugins with their own editors, stores their state in the session, and creates every instance off the audio thread. Built-in processors cover EQ, compressor/limiter, gate, de-esser, maximizer, room and plate reverbs, modulation, saturation, synths and a sampler that plays any WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP3 or OGG across the keyboard.

Which audio and MIDI formats can SoundCraft import?

WAV/BWF/RF64, AIFF/AIFC and FLAC work in both directions at any sample rate and bit depth; MP3, Ogg Vorbis, AAC, ALAC, CAF and the audio of MP4/MOV movies open for editing. MIDI goes through Standard MIDI File import and export, and audio-to-MIDI can convert a sung or played melody. AAF/OMF session interchange is still on the alpha checklist.

Can SoundCraft score to picture and mix in surround?

Yes. It has a picture track with thumbnails and a Video window that follows the playhead, decoding H.264, ProRes and Motion JPEG in pure Rust with timecode burn-in and sync offset. Timebases cover every timecode frame rate including drop-frame, plus Feet+Frames and Samples, and mixing goes from stereo up to 9.1.6 and Ambisonics with a surround panner and a Renderer window.

Can scripts or AI agents drive SoundCraft?

Everything you can click is a command with an id and JSON parameters, reachable from the menus, the keyboard, the command line (soundcraft-cli), a JSON control channel and an MCP server. Programmatic calls never open dialogs, and session.inspect reports exactly what changed so an agent can check its own work.
