Battle for Wesnoth
Free, open source turn-based strategy game set in a high-fantasy world, with single-player campaigns and online multiplayer.
The Battle for Wesnoth is a free, open source turn-based strategy game set in a high-fantasy setting. Players build armies from a variety of factions (Rebels, Loyalists, Orcs, Undead, Drakes, etc.) and fight hex-grid battles across procedurally varied terrain, with day/night cycles that affect unit vision and combat.
The game ships with over 200 single-player campaigns and 35+ multiplayer maps, plus a built-in map editor and a Lua-scripted AI. Online multiplayer is fully supported through the official Wesnoth server, with rankings and persistent ladders. Custom content — factions, campaigns, eras, and maps — can be installed through the in-game add-on manager.
While not a clone of any single commercial title, Wesnoth is the spiritual successor to classic turn-based wargames like Battle Isle, Warlords, and the Heroes of Might and Magic series. It runs natively on Windows, macOS, and Linux, has full translations into 50+ languages, and is developed by a global volunteer community under the GPL-2.0 license.
