Hister
Private, self-hosted search engine that indexes the pages you visit and the files you keep for full-text and semantic search.
Hister is a privacy-focused, self-hosted search engine for your own data. It indexes the full contents of web pages you visit and files you keep, so you can find information again from a web interface, the terminal, or an AI assistant connected through MCP.
A browser extension for Firefox and Chrome automatically saves newly visited pages as you browse, and Hister can also crawl websites or import existing browser history. Search is powered by powerful queries with field filters, phrases, wildcards, negation, and aliases, with an optional semantic search layer backed by an embeddings endpoint of your choice.
Hister is built in Go and designed to run without any configuration for a local personal setup. It supports multiple users for hosting separate indexes for a household, community, or team, and sends no telemetry and requires no cloud service.
