DroppedNeedle ships as a single Docker container that runs on any Docker host, including Linux servers, Unraid, TrueNAS, Synology, and Docker Desktop on macOS or Windows. The web UI works in any browser, and its OpenSubsonic and Jellyfin-compatible APIs let mobile apps like Symfonium, Finamp, Feishin, Amperfy, Jellify, and Manet play from your instance.

Local accounts with three roles (Admin, Trusted, User), OIDC single sign-on with any provider that supports the authorization code flow such as Authelia, Keycloak, or Authentik, and automatic account creation on first Jellyfin, Plex, or OIDC sign-in. Requests from User-role accounts wait in an approval queue, sessions last 30 days, and there is optional password breach checking and HSTS.

Yes. Every route under /api/v1 accepts a Bearer token or session cookie, with interactive Swagger docs at /api/v1/docs on your instance, and a public /health endpoint for container checks. There is also an experimental plugin system (Python running in-process) that you install from a GitHub URL or a local folder.

For acquiring music you supply the download client yourself: slskd driven over its local HTTP API, or SABnzbd with Newznab indexers for Usenet. DroppedNeedle never joins a P2P network or ships indexers itself. You can also use it without either client, since Internet Archive free music under Creative Commons or public-domain licences and drag-and-drop imports of purchased files work with no download client at all.

For playback it connects to Jellyfin, Navidrome, Plex, and local files, plus YouTube preview clips, and exposes OpenSubsonic and Jellyfin APIs for third-party apps. It also supports ListenBrainz and Last.fm scrobbling, Spotify playlist import, Ticketmaster and Skiddle gig alerts, Deezer and iTunes previews, and purchase links with Bandcamp first.
