Tolgee

Developer-friendly, open-source localization platform with in-context editing, SDKs, and machine translation.

Open source alternative to:

Tolgee is an open-source localization platform built around editing translations in the context of the running application. Hold Alt or Option and click a string to open a translation dialog, capture a screenshot with the phrase highlighted, or use the browser extension to translate a deployed production app with an API key. The platform combines projects, keys, languages, glossaries, tasks, translation memory, and branching in one web interface.

Its SDKs for JavaScript frameworks, iOS, and Android load translations from the Tolgee server and power the in-context editor, while a CLI and REST API handle automation and CI workflows. Machine translation is available through DeepL, Google Translate, AWS Translate, or Azure Translator, either with Tolgee-supplied credits or your own API keys. An AI translator adds project descriptions, language notes, screenshots, and translation-memory matches to the prompt, and an MCP server lets AI coding assistants search keys and manage translations from the editor.

The core of Tolgee is Apache-2.0, with enterprise features under ee/ covered by a separate non-commercial Tolgee Enterprise License. Self-hosting runs from the official Docker image, with PostgreSQL, and the free self-hosted tier covers core localization features and up to 10 seats with your own machine-translation keys; SSO and granular permissions require a licensed plan. Tolgee Cloud offers a free plan plus paid tiers, which is how it differs commercially from a fully free tool — but the source remains open and the self-hosted edition has no per-word charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the system requirements for self-hosting Tolgee?

The documented minimum is 2 CPU cores and 4 GB of RAM; the recommended specification is 4 cores, 16 GB of RAM, and 20 GB of free disk. The official tolgee/tolgee image runs on port 8080 and is configured with a config.yaml file or environment variables. Current images bundle PostgreSQL 13, which is deprecated; from v4 you need an external PostgreSQL database, and the docs include a migration guide to PostgreSQL 17.

How does in-context translation work?

With a Tolgee SDK installed, users hold Alt or Option and click a string in the running app to open an editor dialog and change the translation without touching JSON or PO files. The same flow works in production, and the Tolgee Tools browser extension only needs an API key, so non-developers can translate a deployed app. A camera button captures a screenshot with the selected phrases highlighted for context.

Which machine translation and AI services are supported?

Tolgee integrates DeepL, Google Translate, AWS Translate, and Azure Translator. You can use Tolgee-provided credits or supply your own provider API keys, and auto-translation can fill new keys immediately from translation memory or a machine translation service. The AI translator additionally uses screenshots, key and project descriptions, language notes, translation-memory matches, and in-app context to resolve ambiguous strings, with an editable prompt.

Does Tolgee have SDKs, a CLI, and an API?

Yes. There are SDKs for JavaScript frameworks including React, Vue, Angular, Svelte, and i18next, plus iOS and Android SDKs. A tolgee-cli package and a documented REST API cover automation and CI, and an MCP server lets AI coding assistants search keys, create and update translations, manage languages, and trigger machine translation. Chrome and Figma plugins are also available.

What is included in the free self-hosted version?

The free self-hosted edition includes the core localization features and up to 10 seats, and you can use machine translation with your own API keys. Advanced capabilities such as single sign-on and granular permissions require a paid self-hosted license. The source outside the ee/ directories is Apache-2.0; code under ee/ uses the non-commercial Tolgee Enterprise License, which also prohibits offering it as a hosted service.
