Tolgee
Developer-friendly, open-source localization platform with in-context editing, SDKs, and machine translation.
Tolgee is an open-source localization platform built around editing translations in the context of the running application. Hold Alt or Option and click a string to open a translation dialog, capture a screenshot with the phrase highlighted, or use the browser extension to translate a deployed production app with an API key. The platform combines projects, keys, languages, glossaries, tasks, translation memory, and branching in one web interface.
Its SDKs for JavaScript frameworks, iOS, and Android load translations from the Tolgee server and power the in-context editor, while a CLI and REST API handle automation and CI workflows. Machine translation is available through DeepL, Google Translate, AWS Translate, or Azure Translator, either with Tolgee-supplied credits or your own API keys. An AI translator adds project descriptions, language notes, screenshots, and translation-memory matches to the prompt, and an MCP server lets AI coding assistants search keys and manage translations from the editor.
The core of Tolgee is Apache-2.0, with enterprise features under ee/ covered by a separate non-commercial Tolgee Enterprise License. Self-hosting runs from the official Docker image, with PostgreSQL, and the free self-hosted tier covers core localization features and up to 10 seats with your own machine-translation keys; SSO and granular permissions require a licensed plan. Tolgee Cloud offers a free plan plus paid tiers, which is how it differs commercially from a fully free tool — but the source remains open and the self-hosted edition has no per-word charge.
