OpenSC2K
An open-source remake of SimCity 2000 built with Rust and Godot, adding larger cities, mods and HD graphics packs.
OpenSC2K is an open source reimplementation of SimCity 2000. The simulation, file formats, rendering, audio and scripting are native libraries written in Rust, while the interface and game front end run in Godot. It ships as a packaged build for Windows (x64 and arm64), Linux (x64 and arm64) and macOS, with the engine included, so players do not need a Godot install.
It does not include the original game's graphics, text, sound or music. Instead you import assets from your own copy of SimCity 2000 through Import Assets on the main menu: an installed game folder, a macOS .app, extracted files or a mounted CD-ROM. The importer understands the Windows 95, Windows 3.x, Network Edition, DOS and Macintosh releases as well as the demos, and the Windows 95 Special Edition gives the most complete import. Many fixes discovered by the sc2kfix project have been ported into the codebase.
On top of the original game, OpenSC2K supports cities from 16 up to 4096 tiles per side instead of the fixed 128, full-resolution coverage, land value, pollution and crime data maps, a larger pool of microsims and movable objects, an improved terrain generator, height map and transport-trip overlays, more zoom levels and layer controls, MIDI music through FluidSynth, rebindable controls and a Korean translation. Recent autosaves are kept for ten minutes, and a JavaScript runtime lets mods listen to game events through a game API, run sandboxed from the mods folder and debugged through a Chrome DevTools console. Large cities use the .sc2x save format, a ZIP archive that the original game cannot open; original .sc2 cities still load in a compatibility mode until you upgrade them. The project is an independent reimplementation under the MIT license, built through observation and reverse engineering, and it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Maxis or Electronic Arts.
