OpenSC2K is an open source reimplementation of SimCity 2000. The simulation, file formats, rendering, audio and scripting are native libraries written in Rust, while the interface and game front end run in Godot. It ships as a packaged build for Windows (x64 and arm64), Linux (x64 and arm64) and macOS, with the engine included, so players do not need a Godot install.

It does not include the original game's graphics, text, sound or music. Instead you import assets from your own copy of SimCity 2000 through Import Assets on the main menu: an installed game folder, a macOS .app, extracted files or a mounted CD-ROM. The importer understands the Windows 95, Windows 3.x, Network Edition, DOS and Macintosh releases as well as the demos, and the Windows 95 Special Edition gives the most complete import. Many fixes discovered by the sc2kfix project have been ported into the codebase.

On top of the original game, OpenSC2K supports cities from 16 up to 4096 tiles per side instead of the fixed 128, full-resolution coverage, land value, pollution and crime data maps, a larger pool of microsims and movable objects, an improved terrain generator, height map and transport-trip overlays, more zoom levels and layer controls, MIDI music through FluidSynth, rebindable controls and a Korean translation. Recent autosaves are kept for ten minutes, and a JavaScript runtime lets mods listen to game events through a game API, run sandboxed from the mods folder and debugged through a Chrome DevTools console. Large cities use the .sc2x save format, a ZIP archive that the original game cannot open; original .sc2 cities still load in a compatibility mode until you upgrade them. The project is an independent reimplementation under the MIT license, built through observation and reverse engineering, and it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Maxis or Electronic Arts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my own copy of SimCity 2000 to play OpenSC2K?

Yes. OpenSC2K supplies the engine but not the original graphics, text, sound or music, so you point it at your own copy of the game with Import Assets on the main menu or Settings > Import Data. You can import an installed game folder, a macOS .app, extracted game files or a mounted CD-ROM, and the importer reads the Windows 95, Windows 3.x, Network Edition, DOS and Macintosh releases as well as the demos. SimCity 2000 Special Edition for Windows 95 gives the most complete import.

Which platforms does OpenSC2K run on and do I need Godot installed?

There are release packages for Windows x64 and arm64, Linux x64 and arm64, and a single macOS app that runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon. The packages bundle the engine, so you do not need Godot to play. Building from source is different: it needs Godot 4.7 and a Rust toolchain, with a python3 tools/build_native.py step before the first run.

Can OpenSC2K open my existing SimCity 2000 cities?

Yes. Original .sc2 cities open in a compatibility mode that behaves like the original game, and you can choose Upgrade City to SC2X to convert them. Large cities and per-tile data maps use the .sc2x format, a ZIP archive with one raw entry per city structure that the original game cannot open. OpenSC2K also opens and saves the .sc2x files that sc2kfix writes for original 128 by 128 cities.

Does OpenSC2K support mods and custom graphics?

Yes. Mods are written in JavaScript against a game API that exposes game events, and they load from a mods folder where each mod runs in its own sandbox; the Mods tab in Settings turns them on and off, and a Chrome DevTools console is available for development. Separately, external graphics, sound and music packs are supported, including HD sprite packs, so the original art can be replaced without touching the engine.
