Best Free & Open Source Alternatives to Windows

Compare 2 open-source Windows alternatives including Asterinas and Vinix

If you're looking for the best open-source alternative to Windows, Asterinas is a strong place to start. If it doesn't quite fit your needs, there are plenty of other great options worth exploring, including Vinix. We've ranked the top alternatives to help you compare your options and find the right fit.

#1Asterinas

Asterinas

A memory-safe, Linux-compatible OS kernel written in Rust, aiming to be a production-grade Linux alternative.

Asterinas is a general-purpose operating system kernel written from scratch in Rust with a Linux-compatible system call interface. It implements more than 240 Linux system calls, enough for Linux binaries and container images to run on it, and it is built by an independent, community-led project with over 100 contributors and roughly 250,000 lines of code. Rather than incrementally adding Rust to the Linux kernel, the project starts over so that every design decision can assume a memory-safe language.

Its defining idea is the framekernel architecture: the whole OS lives in a single address space like a monolithic kernel, but only a small framework called OSTD is allowed to use unsafe Rust. System calls, filesystems and device drivers must be written in safe Rust, which shrinks the memory-safety trusted computing base while keeping the performance of direct function calls between kernel components. On top of that the project ships OSDK, a toolkit for building, running and testing Rust kernels, and a novel memory-management design called CortenMM. x86-64 is the Tier 1 platform; 64-bit Arm, RISC-V and LoongArch are supported at lower tiers, and Intel TDX confidential VMs are a Tier 2 target. Version 0.19.0 added a DRM graphics subsystem that runs Xorg with Mesa software OpenGL, hypervisor support in OSTD, a Rust-native device model, a rewritten overlayfs and a more complete virtio-fs driver, aimed at using Asterinas as the guest kernel for Kata Containers and Confidential Containers.

The project positions itself against commercially supported Linux and commercial RTOSes: it is MPL-2.0 licensed, with no subscription, support contract or safety certification attached. Its experimental distribution, AsterNixOS, is NixOS with Linux swapped for Asterinas and is explicitly not ready for production use and not affiliated with the NixOS Foundation. The stated 2026 goal is production readiness for standard and confidential virtual machines on x86-64, with data centers, autonomous vehicles and embodied AI as the target deployments. You can try it from the AsterNixOS installer ISO or build the kernel and distribution yourself inside the project's Docker development environment.

#2Vinix

Vinix

A Unix-like operating system written in V, booting on x86-64 and arm64 with a desktop, a package manager and Linux app compatibility.

Vinix is an operating system written mostly in the V programming language, with assembly and C for the low-level parts. It aims to be a modern, fast and easy-to-read kernel that runs on real hardware rather than only inside emulators: x86-64 machines (BIOS or UEFI, IDE and SATA disks, Intel e1000 and VirtIO network cards) and arm64 machines (UEFI, VirtIO storage and networking, including Apple Silicon M1 MacBooks). It is pre-alpha software and its own README says it is not meant for daily or production use.

Despite the early stage, the feature list is broad: a monolithic kernel with SMP support, ext2 as its filesystem, its own pkg package manager backed by a binary repository, an Alpine/musl userland on arm64, and source-level Linux compatibility so existing programs can be ported. The images ship with gcc/g++, git, curl, bash and zsh, and provide X.org plus Wayland (Hyprland on aarch64) for graphical Linux applications. Native apps are built with V's own UI toolkit, V-UI 2. Recent work added real-time scheduling classes (SCHED_FIFO, SCHED_RR, SCHED_DEADLINE), NUMA and multi-socket memory topology, and an experimental Intel VT-x hypervisor exposed through /dev/hypervisor.

Compared with Windows and macOS, Vinix is a from-scratch open source system, licensed GPL-2.0, that you can read top to bottom and rebuild yourself. The trade-off is maturity: it has no iOS or macOS application compatibility yet, its Intel HD graphics driver is still a port of the Linux driver, and the project's roadmap to 1.0 describes feature parity with macOS, Linux and Windows as the long-term goal rather than a current state. It is the tool to watch if you want to see what a kernel written in a modern language looks like, or to experiment with bare-metal V.
