Mindwtr

Open-source Getting Things Done (GTD) app for desktop and mobile — capture every task, then focus on the next action.

Open source alternative to:

Mindwtr is a free, open-source to-do app built on the Getting Things Done (GTD) method. It captures every task and idea in seconds into an Inbox, then guides you through a clarify step and shows only the next actions you can actually act on in a Focus view. It implements the full GTD loop — capture, clarify, organize, engage, and reflect — with a guided weekly review wizard.

Mindwtr is local-first: your data lives on your device, with optional sync through iCloud on Apple devices, Dropbox, a shared folder, your own server, or WebDAV. It ships native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone, and Android, plus a web app that works offline. Advanced features include projects with sections and areas, contexts with nested matching, Waiting For and Someday/Maybe lists, a calendar, a Kanban board, global search with operators, attachments, markdown notes, and an optional AI assistant that can use your own OpenAI, Gemini, Claude, or a self-hosted model.

Mindwtr is a modern alternative to paid task managers like Todoist and OmniFocus. It is simple by default and keeps advanced options out of the way until you need them. For developers it exposes a local REST API, a CLI, and an MCP server so AI assistants can manage your tasks. It is licensed under AGPL-3.0.

Mindwtr ships native apps for Windows via the Microsoft Store, macOS, Linux via Flathub and Snap, iPhone via the App Store, and Android via Google Play, F-Droid, and IzzyOnDroid. There is also a web app that works offline.

How does Mindwtr handle sync and where does my data live?

Can I import existing tasks into Mindwtr?

On desktop, Mindwtr can import tasks from your Obsidian notes and keeps links back to the source notes. There is no built-in importer for Todoist or other task apps.

Does Mindwtr have an API or CLI for automation?

Yes. Mindwtr exposes a local REST API and a CLI, plus a mindwtr-mcp server on npm so AI assistants and automation tools can create and manage your tasks.

Does Mindwtr include AI features?

Mindwtr has an optional AI helper that is off by default. You can connect your own OpenAI, Gemini, or Claude account, or run a private AI model on your own computer. It can help clarify inbox items, break down projects, and review tasks.
