PeerTube
Federated, decentralized video hosting platform built on ActivityPub.
Open source alternative to:
PeerTube is a decentralized, federated video hosting platform that enables anyone to host their own video streaming website while connecting to the broader Fediverse network. Unlike YouTube, which is controlled by a single corporation, PeerTube instances are run by individuals, communities, and organizations who choose their own moderation policies and content focus.
PeerTube uses WebTorrent for peer-to-peer video delivery, reducing bandwidth costs for instance operators by having viewers share the streaming load. Videos on one PeerTube instance can be viewed and subscribed to from any other instance in the federation. It supports live streaming, playlists, chapters, subtitles, and multi-resolution encoding. Content creators can monetize through supporter buttons linked to services like Liberapay and Patreon.
With nearly 15,000 GitHub stars and licensed under AGPL-3.0, PeerTube is maintained by Framasoft, a French non-profit. It is the leading open-source alternative to YouTube for creators and organizations that want to publish video content without platform risk, algorithm dependency, or surveillance advertising.
