Ticker

Terminal-based stock, crypto, and derivatives watcher for live quotes and portfolio positions.

Ticker is a command-line and terminal UI (TUI) app for watching stock, crypto, and derivatives prices in real time while tracking the value of your positions. You give it a watchlist and it renders live quotes in your terminal, refreshing on a configurable interval (5 seconds by default).

It pulls quotes from Yahoo Finance by default and from Coinbase for symbols suffixed .CB, streaming Coinbase spot data over a WebSocket; .X suffixes resolve to short aliases maintained by the project. You can track cost-basis lots (quantity, unit cost, brokerage fee), split watchlists and lots into groups, convert values into a local ISO 4217 currency, and display pre- and post-market prices, open/previous close/day range, position weights, and portfolio totals. Extras include sorting modes, custom hex color schemes, a shared local cache for faster startup, and ticker print for JSON or CSV position output.

Compared with paid terminals such as Bloomberg Terminal, TradingView, Koyfin, or LSEG Workspace, Ticker deliberately does little: no charts, no fundamental research, no news. It is a fast, keyboard-driven quote monitor and position tracker for people who already know what they want to watch. It is GPL-3.0, installs from Homebrew, winget, snap, Docker, or prebuilt binaries, and keeps your watchlist and portfolio in a local YAML file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which platforms does Ticker run on?

Ticker runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows as a single terminal binary. It is distributed through Homebrew, winget, snap, Docker, and prebuilt release archives. There is no web app, mobile app, or browser extension.

Which data sources does Ticker use, and are quotes delayed?

Yahoo Finance is the default source for stocks, ETFs, and many crypto pairs. Symbols ending in .CB pull from Coinbase, where spot data streams in near real time over a WebSocket; derivatives symbols ending in -CDE are polled. Yahoo data is polled at your refresh interval and carries roughly 30 seconds of lag plus any exchange-imposed delay, which the show-tags option displays. CoinCap and CoinGecko suffixes were dropped in v5.0.0.

Can I track positions, cost basis, and multiple lots?

Yes. Define lots in .ticker.yaml with symbol, quantity, unit_cost, and an optional fixed_cost for brokerage commissions. Multiple entries for the same symbol are treated as separate lots, and negative quantities represent short or closed positions. With show-positions and show-summary enabled, Ticker displays weight, average cost, quantity, total value, and total day change.

How do I customize what Ticker displays?

Flags or the config file control the refresh interval, watchlist, sorting (change percent, alpha, value, or your own order), and optional blocks for summary, tags, fundamentals, positions, and separators. You can also set a display currency using an ISO 4217 code, convert only summary values, choose summary-only or full conversion, and override the color scheme with hex triplets for text, tags, and background.

Does Ticker provide machine-readable output?

Yes. Running ticker print writes your positions to stdout as JSON, or as CSV with the --format=csv flag. It requires at least one lot in the configuration file and accepts a specific config path through the --config flag, which makes it usable in scripts and scheduled jobs.
